Sweden has a long and proud tradition in translational medicine, with major pharmaceutical and medical technology companies and many important Swedish research studies with large impact on clinical medicine. However, in the past decade, this landscape has changed drastically as the big pharmaceutical companies have moved out and/or decreased their R&D drastically. This emphasizes the need for other approaches in translational medicine. The European Advanced Translational Research InfraStructure in Medicine (EATRIS) is a framework linking European countries to accelerate the development of new drug therapies, diagnostics and other medical products by facilitating access to a new pan-European infrastructure. The initiation of a Swedish node ( will function as a national infrastructure open to all researchers active in translational biomedical research, and we believe that this is of high strategic importance for securing Sweden´s position as a leading country for medical research. The purpose of this grant proposal is to initiate and organize a Swedish node of EATRIS ( To achieve this goal, we will build a lean, but efficient, organization that will be coordinated from Uppsala University, but with representatives from Swedish Universities with biomedical research (Gothenburg University, Karolinska Institutet/Royal Institute of Technology/Stockholm University, Linköping University, Lund University, Umeå University and Örebro University).
