The European Plate Observing System (EPOS) is an integrated solid Earth Sciences research infrastructure approved by the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) and included in the ESFRI Roadmap. EPOS is a long-term integration plan of national existing solid earth research infrastructures. It is envisaged that a formal EPOS ERIC (European Research Infrastructure Consortium) will be constructed in the near future, perhaps by the start of 2016. In this application we request that VR engages formally in the ongoing EPOS planning phase, i.e. making a decision on a formal "Government Representative" who will participate in the coming EPOS discussions and negotiations. An important aspect is if Sweden should join an ERIC and if so what the membership fee will be. How large such a fee will be will depend on various factors related to EPOS´s technical and administrative design. Important factors are the level of host-premiums for countries hosting the central functions, and the method for distribution of costs between participating partners. These are matters for future negotiation. Swedish participation in EPOS will demand some new coordination activities at national level. What may be appropriate here will not be clear until the EPOS planning has progressed further, therefore we also request a small level of support for these coordination activities.
