The project explores the nature of manifestations of state ideologies in Neo-Latin poetry produced in Sweden c. 1550-1650, the period when the foundations of the Swedish military state were laid. Humanism arrived in Scandinavia relatively late; however, once brought to the Protestant North, its concepts were immediately embraced by Nordic scholars, artists and poets. Nevertheless, the idea still prevails that little of note was written during these years. The project challenges this opinion and seeks to explain how Latin poetry was used to justify the Swedish state-construction programme and how this phenomenon can be set in a wider European context. To achieve this, I examine 1) the socio-cultural and socio-political aspects of these poems, including the relationship between the poets and the state, 2) the role of ancient prototypes for various poetic genres in Neo-Latin poetry, in the context of their reception history, 3) the connection between Latin and vernacular poetry, and 4) the possible interconnections of Swedish Neo-Latin poetry with other European Neo-Latin production. Sociology of literature supplies the main theoretical framework. The results will produce synergies with the work carried out by Neo-Latinists in other countries. The discussions on the discursive mechanisms of early modern poetry will provide an analytical framework and comparative model for understanding how literature affects politics and how politics shape literature.
