This proposal searches funding for the conferenceGender Shifts and Resource Politics in the Arctic,to take place in Uppsala on 21-23 February 2017.Communities throughout the North are affected by pronounced gender asymmetries. Women migrate to urban centers, whereas rural areas turn to predominantly male spaces. Thus, Northern landscapes change their symbolic status from “home” to “resource frontier”, inhabited mostly by temporary contract workers. Existing research from various parts of the Arctic discusses the phenomenon in terms of local conditions and outcomes. Consequently, key regions like the North American, the Fennoscandian, and the Russian, have developed mutually unrelated analyses. By bringing together researchers from the global Arctic, the Conference will provide novel perspectives onthe complex intersection of gender shifts in a pan-Arctic scope. We want to examine the global and local preconditions and consequences ofgender asymmetries in order to build a comparative analytical framework. We intend to contribute theoretically to the study of gender in relation to different natural, economic, and political environments in ways that can simultaneously benefit local communities and future research in Arctic regions and beyond. The theme of the proposed conference follows priorities in Arctic research, in particular the need for deeper understanding of the vulnerability and resilience of Arctic environments and societies in a globalized Arctic.
