This project will produce total-immersion virtual-reality reconstructions of the liturgy in the late 15th C Vadstena Abbey, specifically the multisensory experiences in the church. The aim is scientific exploration, scholarly exchange and public engagement. The cultural heritage Vadstena Abbey is an ideal site at which to study the multisensory production of the past using technology of the present. Saint Birgitta designed the monastery in tandem with the cantus sororum, the only medieval liturgy composed for women. People participated and perceived differently: nuns and monks in their cloisters and choirs, and lay visitors in the nave. Vadstena provides a richness of historical resources second to none. We will use the existing architecture and extant furnishings, archeological evidence and written sources. First musicologists will locate and select the liturgy. Virtual-reality engineers will build a “wire frame.” Acoustic engineers will develop the algorithms for the calculations for changing auralities in space and time. Art historians will assemble data about the building and furnishings. Then the chants will be recorded, the liturgical objects will be tested for their acoustic properties. Finally, the various sensibles will be integrated. The result will be self-directed experiences using a virtual-reality headset. The project will enable the exploration of cognitive and affective aspects of multisensory experiences and their impact on empathy and community formation.
