Further investigation of the neural underpin of cognitive aging, and associated reserve factors is much warranted. In this 3-year post-doctoral project, 2 years will be spent at Colombia University, New York, USA, and 1 year at Umeå University. First, I will study the neural underpin of cognitive aging. Research show that cognitive performance vary across the age span on large batteries of diverse cognitive tests. The multitude of tasks can be parsimoniously represented by a set of reference abilities (RA): episodic memory, fluid ability, perceptual speed, and vocabulary. Nonetheless do most of the cognitive neuroscience research focus on age-related variability in selective tasks. I will use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study age-related changes in brain network activity that are uniquely associated with the 4 RAs. Following I will investigate links between disruptions in these networks and increased beta-amyloid burden, combining fMRI and positron emission tomography. Last I will study how multiple cognitive reserve (CR) factors, including physical exercise, and cognitive enrichment, contributes to maintenance of neural networks in aging. This aim focus on the optimal combination of CR factors that may orchestra individual differences in resilience to negative brain changes. I hope that the results of the project will increase current knowledge about the neural underpin of cognitive aging, and inform interventions to slow age-associated cognitive decline.
