The rechargeable lithium battery has high energy density. During fast charging of a lithium battery, the lithium ions must move quickly between the positive and negative electrodes. The function of the separator in Li batteries is to promote high lithium ion transport, and to improve the battery stability and safety by preventing short circuiting and ‘so called’ lithium dendrite formation. Most works focus on the adjustment of the composition and component of electrolyte, and/or the microstructure of Li metal electrode, in order to increase the cyclability, stability and safety of Li metal electrode. We lack of enough understanding of the effect of separator, which has been neglected as a research area. It is needed for preventing battery short circuiting. This project has the goal to increase the understanding of how different surface modifications of separators used in Li batteries can support high Li-ionic flux, and high stability and safety of lithium batteries. In this collaboration project, we will focus on the study of different polymer based separators to increase their lithium ion transport properties, and to prevent the corrosion of the Li metal electrode. The nano center in Shanghai University and Ångström Advanced Battery Center will jointly study lithium mtal batteries and the results from this project will be important for Li metal battery, but it also can be extended to other batteries using a Li metal electrode (e.g., Li-O2 batteries, and Li-S batteries).
