This project investigates how the securitization of mobility is reshaping the aesthetic traditions of writing about migration in contemporary Arab literature, and analyzes the new forms and modes of narrative that are emerging in response to migration becoming a primary site of national security. The project examines both Arabic literature and literature written in English by writers of Arab background. The aim of this bilingual approach is to develop a comparative analysis of how writers in the diaspora and in the region represent and respond to the discursive pressures which place those who are identified as Arab and/or Muslim under suspicion. Despite the current proliferation of studies at the intersection of literary criticism and security studies, little research has been conducted on representations of security in postcolonial literary texts. Above all, insufficient attention has been paid to how Arab writers portray the nexus of mobility and securitization, even though contemporary Arab literature offers fertile ground for such enquiry. This lack of interest highlights the gaps remaining between Anglophone literary criticism and Arab literary traditions. The proposed project bridges these gaps, theorizing new narratives of mobility in texts that represent and respond to dominant security discourses. As such, it constitutes an important intervention in the emerging field of literary security studies and in current academic debates about security, ethics and mobility.
