The overall purpose of the research I intend to conduct is to examine sources of errors, which are attributable to human cognition, and influence two different types of criminal evidence; forensic evidence and witness evidence. The purpose is also to examine how such errors (unreliability and biasability) are best taken into account in criminal proceedings. To fulfill the research purpose, I intend to conduct three main studies, Study I-III. The first two studies will consist of multiple experiments in which forensic pathologists (Study I) and crime scene investigators, CSIs (Study II) will participate. Study III will also consist of multiple experiments, in which witness statements/identifications are compared to information obtained using so-called Forensic DNA Phenotyping, a technique that predicts human appearance based on forensic samples. The research combines Law, Psychology, Medicine, Criminalistics and Genetics and has a pronounced multidisciplinary approach. As such, the more specific aims are to study the multitude and complex interplay between different scientific fields that are all crucial to both the production and the understanding of criminal evidence. The project is relevant both to national and international jurisdictions as it evaluates issues with criminal evidence that are likely to be found in both. Although the planned post doc studies are of an explorative nature, I intend to continue research in this area also after completing the post doc studies.
