Abstract: In this project, Benyamin Naranjani studies the transport of biologics across the gastrointestinal tract using a physics-based multiscale approach. On the large scale, peptide drug molecules and permeation enhancers, added for increased bioavailability, are transported through the intestinal lumen by peristaltic/segmental motility patterns of the intestinal walls. After making their way across the mucus layer, they reach the intestinal epithelium layer, where nanoscale modeling is needed to acquire an understanding of the corresponding passage across the enterocytes. In this regard, two computational tools namely Lattice-Boltzmann Method (LBM) and Molecular Dynamics (MD) accounting for the macro and micro/nano scales respectively, will form the basis for the computer experimentations.
