Beskrivning

Against the background of raising antibiotic resistance and shortages, this project aims to improve the availability and use of antibiotics in Sweden, considering also the international connections in the complex field of antibiotic supply and use. These broader public health and policy-related goals are supported by the creation of evidence-based knowledge within five work-packages: (1) Definition of national needs and priorities, (2) Optimization studies, (3) Implementation of methods for rational antibiotic use, (4) New economic models to improve availability, and (5) Data analysis to support individualized therapy. PLATINEA entails also an entirely new model for close collaboration between stakeholders from four sectors, all essential to address these challenges: healthcare, academia, industry and public agencies. Researchers from the management field are engaged in devising policy options to address the multiple failures in the antibiotic market, including incentives to improve highly fragile supply chains. This work has already led to 10 prioritized policy options currently under consideration by Swedish authorities for possible implementation.
