Kort presentation
Jag är professor i kvantitativ mikroskopi på insitutionen för informationsteknologi och SciLifeLab. Min forskargrupp utvecklar metoder föra att få ut information från digitala mikroskopibilder. Målet kan vara att utvärdera effekten av läkemedel eller göra mätningar som fungerar som stöd vid medicinsk diagnostik. Metoderna är ofta en blandning av maskininlärning och artificiell intelligens. Biografi
I grunden är jag civilingenjör i molekylär bioteknik, och tog min examen 1998. När jag gjorde mitt examensarbete fascinerades jag av hur man kan studera celler med hjälp av mikroskopi, och fortsatte som doktorand inom digital bildbehandling, med fokus på metoder för att hitta celler och få kvantitativa mått ur digitala mikroskopibilder. Efter disputationen 2003 gjorde jag en postdoc inom genetik och patologi, med stort fokus på metodutveckling, och fick sedan anställning vid Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT i USA. Där jobbade jag med metoder för storskalig användning av små modellorganismer, som C. elegans maskar och zebrafiskar, för att utvärdera effekten av nya potentiella läkemedel. 2011 kom jag tillbaka till Sverige och SciLifeLab på deltid, och är sedan 2014 professor inom kvantitativ mikroskopi vid Centrum för Bildanalys och avdelningen för visuell information och interaktion på Institutionen för Informationsteknologi. Min forskargrupp utvecklar matematiska metoder för analys av olika typer av mikroskopibilder med tillämpningar inom livsvetenskaperna, både grundforskning och mer tillämpad forskning.

Forskning
Digital bildanalys handlar om att med datorns hjälp tolka bilder. Till exempel kan man träna datorn att känna igen olika familjemedlemmar i semesterbildrena eller automatiskt läsa av en bils registreringsnummer vid en biltull. Min forskargrupp utvecklar digitala bildanalysmetoder för att automatiskt analysera och läsa ut kvantitativ information från digitala bilder insamlade med hjälp av olika typer av mikroskop. Ofta handlar det om att mäta förändringar i färg, form, mönster och storlek i stora mängder bilder som samlats in med hjälp av automatiserade mikroskop, t.ex. för att utvärdera hur ett läkemedel påverkar celler eller modelorganismer som odlats i laboratoriemiljö. Det kan också handla om att mäta förändringar i vävnadsprover för att diagnostisera sjukdomar eller förstå hur kroppen reagerar på olika behandlingar. En del av de metoder vi jobbar med baserar sig på artificiell inteligens och mer specifikt deep convolutional neural networks. Vi samarbetar med forskare både från livsvetenskaperna och medicin, och utvecklar metoder som kan svara på viktiga fråger på ett robust, snabbt och reproducerbart sätt.
