Winter Garden

Plants from the Mediterranean and the subtropics thrive in the Winter Garden. Ancient cultivated plants such as lemon Citrus limon and bay laurel Laurus nobilis grow side by side with more exotic plants such as feijoa or pineapple guava Acca sellowiana, cycads, and tree ferns. Here you can make acquaintance with allspice Pimenta dioica and Brazilian pepper tree Schinus terebinthifolia. The former is related to common myrtle (the Myrtle family, Myrtaceae), the latter to mango (the Cashew family, Anarcardiaceae), i.e., none of them are, despite many peoples beliefs, related to the Pepper family (Piperaceae)! Neither are chili pepper, red or green pepper (Capsicum), which all belong to the Potato family Solanaceae.
