Research ethics is an important part of advanced academic learning. All scientific fields and every academic discipline raises their own, complex ethical issues. Successful ethics management requires both theoretical and practical knowledge, and awareness of relevant norm systems, within both science and society. This knowledge and these skills are provided through our research ethics training, based on science and critical analysis.
We help PhD students develop their ability to self-reflect and take part in critical discussions about the theoretical and practical ethical issues raised by their research, research ethics and different solutions. We support our students to reflect and learn through dialogue and participation. We also help them develop a toolbox to communicate about both research questions and results.
Research ethics for doctoral students at Uppsala University
The Centre's mission includes providing research ethics training across the entire University. Research ethics is mandatory for doctoral students in technology, science, medicine and pharmacy. The Centre is responsible for ethics, philosophy of science and science communication for the disciplinary domain of medicine and pharmacy. PhD students in science and technology can choose a course offered by the Centre, or pick another course with an equivalent syllabus. We also teach several courses for doctoral students in the humanities and social sciences.

The Centre offers three master level courses for 7,5 credits each at the Department of Public Health and Caring Sciences, covering neuroethics, ethics and public health & ethics in research, writing and communication.

Ethical dilemmas and value conflicts arise every day, in every workplace. Uppsala University is providing skills for future professionals by integrating ethics in the syllabus for several education programmes.
