AFSIN - African Spectral Imaging Network

The AFSIN network is a collaboration between physicists in eight African countries and one Asian country.

The ISP former and present supported groups at University of Nairobi (Kenya), University of Science, Techniques and Technology of Bamako (Mali) and University Joseph Ki-Zerbo (Burkina Faso) are members of the network, as well as formerly supported groups at University of Cape Coast (Ghana), University Cheikh Anta Diop (Senegal) and University of Colombo (Sri Lanka).

The network is coordinated by Professor Jérémie Zoueu, Department of Electricity and Electronics, National Polytechnic Institute, Ivory Coast.

The network has received ISP support since 2011.

Objectives

The overall goal of the network is to contribute to the benefit of the laboratories in the member countries, to the development of research activities of international standard in the fields of applied spectroscopy and spectral imaging.

The strategy to achieve the overall goals is to organise annual workshops for training students and young scientists in the areas of optical spectral and imaging techniques applied to medicine, agriculture and the environment.

The network also builds instruments for realistic diagnostic tools related to tropical diseases such as malaria, to monitor pollution affecting agriculture and environment, and to use optical diagnostics for quality control and improved crop yield.
