Mindfulness-Based Stress Management

We are happy to announce that in spring 2024, the free-standing course Mindfulness-Based Stress Management (7,5 hp) will be offered again, at the advanced level (180 credits).

To give you an idea of the course set up and the commitment this course involves, please find the previous spring 2023 schedule here. The same structure will be used in spring 2024, however, the course will run over weeks 3-12, probably on Thursday and/or Friday afternoons (possibly Tuesdays). As soon as we have the details set for the spring 2024 course (depending on how many apply/how many classes we will offer), we will update this page!

Mindfulness – a research-based practice for health and well-being

Mindfulness is about being purposefully aware, in the moment, without judgement. A large body of research demonstrates that the practice of mindfulness leads to a higher sense of control, lower perceived stress, and improved health and well-being.

Programs developed at Massachusetts and Oxford universities

The new Uppsala University course departs from two evidence-based mindfulness programs: the original Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program, developed at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, USA, and the Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) program, developed at Oxford University, England.

The program is taught at top universities around the world including the Ivy League universities in the USA, and the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm.

What you will learn

Participants will learn to use mindfulness as an evidence-based tool for stress management, well-being, and health in their personal and professional life. This can be particularly helpful for students working in stressful environments and fields where they encounter different forms of trauma, such as healthcare, social work, sustainable development, aid in conflict zones and post-conflict peacebuilding.

When, where and how

The Mindfulness-Based Stress Management course will run at part-time (50%) over 10 weeks (January 15 – March 22, 2024), on campus.

The course entails the following elements:

The first eight weeks of the course (weeks 3-10):

  • one session per week à 3 hours (ca 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, day TBD)
  • one silent retreat day on Saturday February 24, 2024 (ca 9:00am – 4:00 pm).

These sessions, including the silent retreat day, are mandatory. Between sessions, participants will practice guided meditations and yoga at home, for 30 mins to 1 hour per day.

The last two weeks of the course (weeks 11 & 12):

  • a lecture day (voluntary participation)
  • two examining seminars (mandatory)
