As a student of any of our subjects you will have lectures at the English Park Campus, a complex with a mixture of old and new - buildings filled with history as well as top modern equipment. The complex houses art subjects - e g languages, literature and sociology - and you will meet students of all disciplines in our joint library, the Karin Boye.
Here at the department of Archaeology and Ancient History we have several international research projects, which means that almost regardless of your sphere of interest, you can be supervised by well-qualified teachers. Our research encompasses the entire (pre-)history and nearly all cultural areas in the world. As a student you are encouraged to attend lectures both by our own renowned researchers and by those held by the many guest lecturers and researchers that visit the department.
Lectures and seminare are held our modern facilities, often with video link to Campus Gotland, since many courses are given in parallel. Your teachers are also researchers, teaching in their specialist areas. During the field course sections, you participate in excavations where the results become an important part of research - from the Iron Age mounds of Gamla Uppsala to the medieval house foundations at Hellby/Fyrislund.
The department has a really active student society, Fjölnir, collecting students from all department courses and subjects. Fjölnir organises many events of both culture and sport, pub crawls, gaming nights etc. Read more about the student society Fjölnir.
Owing to the large collections of ancient finds collected during many field seasons in Sweden, Anatolia, Italy, Greece to mention but a few excavation sites, you will have opportunities to try true hands-on archaeology!
