Morality, Ethics and Cosmology

Socially constituted ideas of what is moral or ethical define a person’s social status and personhood. We are interested in what is conceived as moral. Understandings of ethics and morality vary greatly in cultural contexts, and are connected with cosmological ideas.

We also ask: what makes a good life, or constitutes a good person? Which place in the universe do humans see themselves occupying? How do people make ethical and moral sense of their actions and beliefs? How are they mediated? For example, research at our department has been conducted on religious change in post-apartheid South Africa, the ideas of mediation and moral communities in African cities, and morality in relation to gender and sexuality in contemporary China.
