General Guidelines for Chemical Safety at the Department of Electrical Engineering
The instruction regards the ordering, transporting, handling, storage, and labeling of chemicals and flammable goods, handling of laboratory waste, registration, as well as the measures to take for risk prevention.
Education
All new users who will use chemicals should take proper training on handling of chemicals. Contact the department’s chemical safety officer (CSO).
Ordering of chemicals
Contact the CSO for ordering of chemicals. Provide recent material safety data sheets (SDS) to the CSO. Do not order hazardous chemicals without permission from the CSO.
Transporting of chemicals to the lab
When the ordered chemicals arrive, contact the department’s chemical safety officers to transport the chemicals from the chemical storage room to a specific lab.
Use and storage of chemicals in the dedicated labs
Always work within the dedicated areas. Follow the rules in the labs. Use the fume hoods with ventilation for handling hazardous chemicals.
Mark the chemicals using label and proper color mark dot. Store the chemicals in dedicated storage cabinet.
Registration of chemicals
Every chemical must be logged in the KLARA inventory with an updated safety data sheet (SDS).
Handling of chemical waste
Collect chemicals that cannot be poured down the drain in empty bottles. Apply chemical waste label. Avoid mixing incompatible chemicals in one bottle. It is the CSO’s responsibility to transport them to the chemical storage 31K605 and 31K606. If you require special containers for waste needles please contact Esat Pehlivan (esat.pehlivan@physics.uu.se, 072-9999371). Sharp objects and glass waste must be thrown in yellow bins.
First aid measures
In case of small amount and known spill of chemicals, go to the nearest room where you can find decontamination kit to clean up the spill. In case of large amount of spill and unknown spills:
Contact your CSO (see below for contact information)
Inform the other people to evacuate the contaminated area
Do not leave the contaminated area until the CSO arrives, and stay outside of the contaminated area if the contaminant is fuming chemical.
In case of fire accident from flammable chemical, according to the Act on Protection against Accidents, what you should do, if possible, is to warn those in danger and, if necessary, call for help. Also if possible, you should make an attempt extinguishing any flames you see or help those in direct danger, but only if you can avoid risking your own life. Contact CSO and fire safety officer (Tomas Nyberg, 070-4250790).
In case of uncontrollable fire, call 112, the SOS Alarm.
In case of immediate threats to life, health or property
Call SOS Alarm (00)112 to contact rescue services, ambulance, police etc. Call the University emergency number 018-471 25 00 as well to notify the crisis management.
In the event of a serious incident, or when in immediate need of a security officer, call the University emergency number 018-471 25 00.
Show rescue services, ambulance and police the way to the accident site.
Evacuate the workplace if necessary.
In case of chemical spills, block the affected area.
