What is included in the doctoral education?

The postgraduate programme comprises at least 120 credit points for a licentiate degree, typically two years training, and at least 240 credit points for a doctoral degree, i.e. four years training. The program includes both a number of courses and other theoretical elements, and the actual thesis work.

The doctoral education includes a theroretical part, with courses and other theroretical components, and the actual thesis work. At IGP the thesis work often invilves experimental (wet laboratory) work, resulting in publications in scientific journals.

Courses and other theoretical components

Some of the courses and theoreticla parts are mandatory for all doctoral students. This includes doctoral education courses and seminars, and annual follow-ups and half-time seminars. At IGP, participation in Rudbeck seminars or The Svedberg seminars is also compulsory.

  • For a licentiate degree, at least 15 credits are required and all compulsory courses should be finished.
  • For the half-time seminar, all compulsory courses should be finished.
  • For at doctoral degree, at least 30 credits are required and all compulsory courses should be finished.

The following courses are mandatory

  1. Introduction to Doctoral Education (1.5 credits).
  2. Introduction to Scientific Research (10 credits) or courses 3–5 below
  3. Research Ethics and Theory of Science (3 credits).
  4. Communication in Science and Education (3.5 credits).
  5. Introduction to Biostatistics (3.5 credits).

These courses are mandatory if the project so requires.

  • Laboratory Animal Science
  • Radiation Science
  • Course on contagious substances

It is also possible to take other doctoral courses that are in line with the student's own education.
