PhD studies

Subjects

PhD studies (in Sweden) are provided in so-called subjects (or disciplines). At the Department of Philosophy there are two subjects, each with its own PhD programme: Aesthetics and Philosophy.

General study syllabus and individual study plan

PhD studies (in Sweden) are based upon a general study syllabus for the subject and an individual study plan for the PhD student. The general study syllabi for the department's two subjects are found in the links below. The individual study plan is drawn up for each PhD student as they are admitted.

Admission, employment, selection, and open positions

Admission and employment

Only fully-funded applicants may be admitted to PhD programmes. Admitted applicants are therefore typically employed as doctoral students at the Department of Philosophy. Open doctoral positions (also called "PhD positions") are advertised without regularity, and the competition is high.

Selection

When selecting among applicants to a doctoral position, special importance is given to the quality of each applicant's written works. For all doctoral positions advertised, a committee of 3–4 persons evaluates the written works supplied by the applicants (usually master's theses, but bachelor's theses and other shorter representative academic works may also be evaluated).

Open positions

Open doctoral positions are advertised on Uppsala University's web page Jobs and vacancies at Uppsala University and in the department's news section.
