Donating items to the collections

Uppsala University Library's collections have a breadth and age that make them unique in the world. This is why the Library has a responsibility to preserve them for future generations, as well as to continue building on the collections with older and newer material of historical and cultural interest. Donations are an important way to enrich the Library's collections, especially when it comes to older materials and special collections (see the Library's acquisition strategy, pdf) Pdf, 1 MB..

The Library works to ensure that donated material is freely available for research and studies within the University's academic fields.

What can you donate?

The Library builds on and expands existing collections. The goal is to meet the information needs of research and education in the academic fields of the University for current and future users – both through donations and via other types of acquisitions.

The types of material accepted by the Library are

  • archives of individuals and organisations
  • individual manuscripts, both old and modern
  • photographs, architectural plans, drawings, engravings and lithographs
  • maps and atlases
  • books or collections of books, newspapers, journals and ephemera
  • digital archives, text and image materials and email correspondence. Please note that we are not currently able to preserve and provide access to all types of files and content.

Swedish print items are only accepted in exceptional cases, and only when they complement existing collections or are of particular interest due to their provenance.

Press clippings are only accepted in exceptional cases, and only in connection with an archive.

The Library does not accept

  • objects, such as statues, statuettes, oil paintings, coins or medals.

For objects and works of art, in particular those with links to Uppsala and academia, please contact Uppsala University Museums (Museum Gustavianum, Evolution Museum, Medical Museum, Coin Cabinet and the Art Collections).

Contact

Do you have items that you think might be of interest to the Library? You are welcome to contact us via Ask the Library.

Before a material is handed over to the Library, an agreement must be in place. The Library is not able to accept donation spontaneously.

A donation document is drawn up, regulating the terms and conditions for using the material.

A donation means that the ownership rights are transferred in their entirety to Uppsala University Library, which will store and provide the material, and to the extent resources permit also sort, describe and catalogue it. The purpose is primarily that the material should be freely available for research.

Ahead of delivery of an archive – in particular if it is a large archive – we would like to inspect the scope and character of the archive on location. The delivery is then usually done by the donor him-/herself bringing the archive to the Library.
