Extreme climate events demonstrate the urgency of social transition and adaptation. What kind of leadership do researchers and politicians need to take on climate change? This is the topic of the seminar Extreme climate events: what kind of climate change leadership is required in research and politics? which Uppsala University is organising at Almedalen Week.

The climate is rapidly changing because of human activities. The rising average temperature and greater frequency of various extreme climate events are clearly observable in Sweden as well. The changes have impacts both on society and on valuable ecosystems. This means that we have to reorganise our societies and adapt them to the new climate reality.

“A bigger budget is needed, better planning is needed, better coordination is needed between national and local politics. So we want to show what the research has to say about these issues and create a basis for discussion among the politicians,” says Mikael Karlsson, Senior Lecturer in Climate Change Leadership, who is participating in the seminar.
