Many young people are recruited to criminal gangs at an early age. How can society best prevent this negative trend? Researchers and other actors in society will meet at a seminar at Almedalen to discuss measures to help young people.

The seminar is being organised by U-FOLD, the forum for research on addiction to medical products and illegal drugs at Uppsala University. The participants include Police Commissioner Jale Poljarevius from Polisregion Mitt. U-FOLD wants to call attention to the problem of young people in Sweden today being recruited to criminal gangs in their early teens.

“A report has come out showing that the supportive measures we take for young people do not appear to be helping. Ninety per cent of those who have committed crimes will go on to commit further crimes, which means we have to find new ways to address the issue,” says Professor Mathias Hallberg, chair of U-FOLD.

Who do you want to meet at Almedalen?

“Politicians, decision-makers and the general public to raise awareness of this issue. But we also want to meet journalists and media representatives. In some cases we will be initiating new questions and in others we want to keep the existing awareness and debate alive.”
