Forms of study funding

There are several ways that doctoral students can fund their studies, which affect their work and employment conditions in different ways. The faculty must report each doctoral student’s form of funding in Ladok, on a term-by-term basis, in the same way it does student activity.

  • DTJ - Employment as a doctoral student at an institute of higher educationirrespective of who provides the funding for the position.
  • EXT – Other employment outside the university that permits doctoral studies as third-cycle level can be pursued as part of an employment at authorities, municipalities, county councils or trade union associations.
  • FTG – An industrial doctoral student, i.e. a doctoral student who is employed by a company (and receives his/her salary from the company) and pursues third-cycle level studies as part of the employment.
  • ING – No funding or the employment has no connection to the third-cycle level study. This category also includes student aid.
  • STI – Various kinds of scholarships, both Swedish and foreign.
  • USL – Employment as doctor with a scope to carry out third-cycle studies as part of the employment.
  • UTJ - Other position (than as a doctoral student) at this or other institute of higher education (including foreign seats of learning) that allows third-cycle studies to be pursued as part of the employment.

The most common and in-demand form of study funding at Uppsala University is an employment on a doctoral studentship. When a doctoral student is employed by Uppsala University, the university is responsible for both study-related and employer-related matters.

If a doctoral student is employed outside Uppsala University, the external employer is responsible for employer-related matters while Uppsala University retains responsibility for study-related matters.
