Master’s Programmes

The Department of Law at Uppsala University offers three top quality, internationally relevant master programmes each academic year, starting every autumn semester. Two of the master programmes comprise of one academic year, 60 credits, and lead to a Master of Laws (60 credits) LLM with Legal Science as the main field of study. The third programme comprises of 2 academic years, 120 credits, and is collaboration between Uppsala University, University of Eastern Finland and UiT the Arctic University of Norway.

The language of instruction is English and the programmes are given on campus, with in principle compulsory attendance. Here below you can find more information on each of the programmes that we offer.

Investment Treaty Arbitration

The Master's Programme in Investment Treaty Arbitration, the first of its kind, provides you with everything you need for a successful career in a rapidly growing area of law. You will gain advanced and detailed knowledge and highly practical skills in the field of international investment law and arbitration. Our graduates work in leading positions in international law firms, government, international organisations, businesses, and academia.

The Department of Law at Uppsala University, as one of the first higher-education institutions in Europe, is offering a one-year post-graduate programme in the second cycle for students with a three-year (or more) law degree. It is starting in autumn and is designed to focus on the complex procedural and material issues that can arise in investment disputes. The programme will be given entirely in English and will be directed, in collaboration with other international experts, by Steffen Hindelang, professor of international investment law and commercial law at Uppsala University.

Comparative and International Tax Law

Do you want to work with complex legal questions concerning international taxation? Do you feel an urge for the greatest knowledge? If yes, then the Master's programme in Comparative and International Tax Law is what you are looking for. You will not only deepen your knowledge of legal methodology used when approaching and solving international tax law cases, but also develop skills in critical thinking and problem-solving. In addition, you will establish a big international network.

Joint Nordic Master’s Programme in Environmental law (2 years)

The Nordic Master Programme in Environmental Law (NOMPEL) involves studies in Sweden, Finland and Norway and offers in-depth knowledge of international and European Union (EU) environmental law with Nordic case studies. You will get a broad understanding of the principles and mechanisms of environmental law. Further, the programme provides a specialisation in the law relating to climate and energy transition, natural resource use and biodiversity protection – arguably the most pressing environmental challenges of our time.

You will acquire special legal knowledge and skills within two key environmental fields; management of natural resources and the protection of biodiversity; and, climate change and energy transition.

You will study in three Nordic countries. First at Uppsala University in Sweden, then at the University of Eastern Finland in Joensuu, and finally at UiT The Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø. This will give you an international experience within and alongside the education. Each university has its own cultural and social environment.

The programme leads to a joint degree from the three participating universities: Master of Legal Science (120 credits) (Uppsala University), Master of International and Comparative Law (University of Eastern Finland), and Master of Laws (UiT The Arctic University of Norway).
