About the PhD programme in Gender Studies

The PhD programme in Gender Studies at the Centre for Gender Research was established in 2016. Before then the PhD students active at the Centre were admitted in other disciplines, but partly funded by, and placed at the Centre.

The Research Environment at the Centre

At the Centre for Gender Research, there are both PhD students in Gender Studies, as well as PhD students in other disciplines, but with a gender studies orientation.

The Centre has a lively internal and external seminar culture, as well as a student-led PhD Forum. There are also several research groups to which the PhD students are affiliated and which have their own meetings and activities.

In 2022 the PhD programme was evaluated by an external panel. In their summary of the PhD programme they stated that:

"[t]he programme offers the PhD students an education of high academic quality and pedagogical rigour in an inspiring, lively and innovative research milieu, and lives up to its outspoken goal to be “a truly interdisciplinary education”. The programme clearly meets the goals of the higher education regulations, also distinguishing itself positively among Swedish, Nordic and European programmes in the field."

The Structure of the PhD Programme

The PhD programme comprises 240 academic credits for a doctorate degree (equivalent to four years full-time study, of which 60 credits are from PhD courses), or 120 academic credits for a licentiate degree (equivalent to two years full-time study).

Each PhD student is assigned at least two supervisors, one of which is the primary supervisor, and one assistant supervisor. Supervisors are appointed by the Director of the Centre for Gender Research, in consultation with the Director of PhD Studies. For each PhD student an individual study plan is also established. The individual study plan is reviewed by the PhD student and supervisors, at least once a year.
