Introduction to the medical humanities

The Centre for Medical Humanities offers doctoral students in biomedicine, health, humanities and social sciences a course that introduces medical humanities as a field of research.

This theoretical and empirical course of 4-6 credits covers the origin and development of medical humanities as a field of research as well as core themes and central challenges within the field. The course is designed to increase understanding of the different cultures within biomedical and humanities research and the way in which the medical humanities can combine and bridge their perspectives, methods and goals.

The course provides a basis for undertaking interdisciplinary studies related to health and medicine. It will enable PhD students to place themselves and their research projects in relation to a larger academic context both within the medical humanities and their respective disciplines, provide a forum for interaction and exchange between disciplines and universities, and create awareness of and engagement in overarching themes and perspectives relevant to the field as a whole.

The course is organized as a series of seminars held at Uppsala University's Center for Medical Humanities, supplemented by written assignments, presentations and guest lectures.
