Research at Centre for Medical Humanities (CMH)

Research in the field of medical humanities is conducted both at the Centre for Medical Humanities and at other departments at Uppsala University. CMH works actively to promote interdisciplinary research in the borderland between the humanities and social sciences on the one hand, and medicine, pharmacy and health sciences on the other. We do this, for example, by building networks of researchers in various disciplines and fields of science with interests in the field of medical humanities. A graduate school in medical humanities started at CMH in January 2023, within which five doctoral students work on interdisciplinary projects.

Research in history of medicine

At the Department of History of Science and Ideas, where CMH is located, the history of medicine is a strong research area. The research projects conducted at the department range from early modern pharmacology and the establishment phase of forensic medicine to contemporary bioscience, and are characterized by a diversity of perspectives such as connections between health and gender, aspects of power in public health and welfare, and the visual and material culture of medicine.
