Pedagogical development

ENLIGHT offers support for development of new freestanding interdisciplinary courses. These courses may be carried out completely or partially online, and contain different elements of Challenge-based Education. The courses are usually interdisciplinary, and are designed for attendance by students from all nine ENLIGHT universities. So far, courses have been developed within the following formats:

  • Living lab: Challenge-based course where concrete societal challenges are addressed in direct communication with representatives from the ENLIGHT region that has presented the challenge.
  • Short programme: Much like ‘living labs’, these courses are oriented around societal challenges presented by cities and regions in the ENLIGHT alliance. In this format, direct involvement from the case owner in the course is not a prerequisite, which provides freedom for the teacher to revisit the challenge(s) in different ways during the courses.
  • Blended intensity programme (BIP): Challenge-based course primarily carried out online. Students from the nine ENLIGHT universities attend digitally from their home universities and gather for a joint intensive study week on the campus of the responsible university towards the end of the course.
  • Distance learning: ENLIGHT courses can also be carried out completely online with participants from the alliance’s nine universities.

Challenged-based Education (CBE)

The world faces “wicked” problems that continue to perplex policy makers, academics and citizens alike. These problems, often at the intersection of environmental, social, economic and political domains has led thought leaders in all fields to innovate to help better prepare for the uncertainty riddled future. The emergence of Challenge-based Education (CBE) as a teaching and learning strategy is as well an educational response to help better prepare students for challenges they are likely to encounter in the workplaces of tomorrow.

Among these knowledge resources, you can find:

  • Introduction to Challenge-based Education
  • Theoretical Background
  • Assessments and Deliverables
  • Guiding Students in CBE
  • Benefits and Challenges
  • Designing Challenge-based Education
