Adolf Gogoll (1957-2023)

For more than 35 years professor Adolf Gogoll was an appreciated, committed and enthusiastic supervisor, teacher and colleague, both within and outside the department.

His scientific and educational work was in organic chemistry, especially the study of molecules in solution using NMR spectroscopy. Over the years, he didn’t only use the technology himself, he also taught and inspired all categories of users. He was responsible for instrument maintenance, and helped countless researchers solve their scientific challenges without the desire for anything in return. He was a mainstay during the construction of the NMR Uppsala infrastructure, which is located in Department of Chemistry - BMC's premises and jointly financed across faculty boundaries.

Adolf was generous with his time and had the ability to communicate kindly and constructively with everyone without compromising his integrity, both in daily conversations and in assignments where he consistently worked for the good of the department, the faculty and the university. The department had started planning for the retirement Adolf had announced for the summer of 2024, but at the time of his death he was still involved in several courses, in supervision and with several ongoing assignments within and outside Uppsala University.

We remember with gratitude his low-key humor, generous commitment and contagious curiosity.

Premium in memory of Adolf Gogoll

Based on donations from friends, colleagues and former students a fund has been created in memory of Adolf Gogoll and his scientific and educational work in organic chemistry, especially the study of molecules in solution using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR spectroscopy), hereinafter referred to as "the field".

With support from the fund, a student at (i) doctoral level or (ii) advanced level, who has completed high-quality studies in the field can be recognized by receiving a premium in memory of Adolf Gogoll. The recipient shall present their work in Uppsala in the form of a specially invited lecture, and clearly state that the premium in memory of Adolf Gogoll has been received. Eligible to be appointed are those who conduct, or have conducted, studies at (i) doctoral level or (ii) advanced level at a Swedish higher education institution. One recipient/year is chosen, and an individual can only be awarded the premium once per category.

Nominations should be addressed to the Head of the Department of Chemistry-BMC, no later than June 15, and should include:

  • CV of the nominee (1 page).
  • Copy of the nominee’s work: PhD in category (i) scientific article or approved doctoral thesis, non-PhD in category (i) or (ii) scientific article or approved master thesis. The work must have been approved or published a maximum of 12 months before the deadline for nomination.
  • A nomination letter from a supervisor or other educational representative. For scientific articles a nomination letter from a senior co-author that clarifies how current work relates to the field, the importance of the work for the field and, the nominee's contribution.
