Gilson Dutra started his doctoral studies in 2022 and is studying health economics and public economics. He embarked on the program due to his interest in politics and his desire to contribute to improving legislation and people's daily lives by studying public policy and economics.

What inspired you to pursue a doctoral degree in economics?

I'm interested in understanding and studying politics through an economic lens. I want to contribute to improving people's daily lives worldwide by evaluating public policies.

Can you tell us about your current research?

I am currently working in the fields of health economics and public economics. I am investigating how the health of children and mothers is affected by the availability of maternal and child health care, capacity issues in maternity wards, and ultrasound practices.

How do you plan to apply your economic expertise in the real world and in your future career?

I want to conduct research that can be used to improve or create public policies. I believe economics can be used as a tool to enhance people's quality of life, and I want to do this by examining societal issues and proposing ways to address them.

What advice would you give to those considering applying to the PhD program in economics at Uppsala university?

The first year of the doctoral program is quite demanding but provides a solid foundation in macroeconomics, microeconomics, and econometrics, both theoretically and applied. During the second year, there are opportunities to specialize and take courses both in Uppsala and at other universities focusing on topics needed for writing the dissertation. Having the opportunity to study at other universities also provides excellent networking opportunities. Additionally, Uppsala is a fantastic place with a unique academic environment.

What opportunities for collaboration and networking have you found at the department?

The Department of Economics has many research groups where we as doctoral students can participate and have the opportunity to share our research with other scholars. Moreover, everyone at the department is very helpful during courses and the research process. All professors and lecturers are willing to assist and provide advice even if they are not your supervisors.
