Marie Allen

Marie Allen is a professor in forensic genetics at Uppsala University and is the deputy head of the department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology. Her research group focuses on developing techniques and assays to simplify and optimise forensic DNA analysis. A primary goal is to improve the possibility of analysing samples with limited amounts of DNA and degraded DNA. Several novel assays and strategies have been developed based on real-time PCR, fragment analysis, Sanger-sequencing and NGS analysis (Next Generation Sequencing).

The novel strategies have helped in cold case investigations and recent cases requested by Swedish law enforcement. The new technologies have also been used in historical DNA research, as in the identification of Nicolaus Copernicus, Carin Göring and Saint Birgitta of Sweden. Allen has also developed a Master’s program in Forensic Science (2 years) at Uppsala University. The program includes forensic medicine, criminalistics, forensic genetics, law, psychology and forensic chemistry.
