Beskrivning
Vår grupp undersöker kemi och biologi hos de möjligen tidigaste djuren som dyker upp på vår planet: Svampdjuren (phylum Porifera).
Svampdjuren representerar idag cirka 9 200 arter, varav 161 arter finns i svenska vatten och förmodligen mer än 300 arter i norska vatten. Svampdjuren förekommer över hela världen, från tropikerna till polerna, från grunt vatten till havsdjupen. Förutom att vara viktiga modeller för att förstå djurens utveckling, är svampdjuren utan tvekan den ledande källan till nya marina föreningar, med 200 nya svampdjursmetaboliter som upptäcks varje år.
Med hjälp av olika datakällor, såsom sekundära metaboliter, morfologi och genetik / genomik, studerar vårt laboratorium utvecklingen av dessa djur och syftar till att upptäcka naturliga svampdjursmetaboliter, för att förstå varför och hur de produceras i svampdjuren och om det kan leda till nya läkemedel.

Svamp 2016-2020
Svampgrundar är bland de mest mångfaldiga, ekologiskt och biologiskt viktiga marina ekosystemen i djuphavet, och ändå har de hittills fått väldigt lite forskningsuppmärksamhet.
Vi är nu en del av en stor EU-finansierad H2020-konsortium för att undersöka svampgrundar i djuphavet i norra Atlanten (dvs. svampdominerade samhällen).
Det främsta målet med projektet SponGES är att utveckla en integrerad ekosystembaserad strategi för att bevara och hållbart använda djuphavets svampekosystem i norra Atlanten.

Vår grupp vid Uppsala universitet kommer att fortsätta utforska den metabola mångfalden hos de huvudsakliga svamparna från svampgrundar i norra Atlanten, kombinerat med genomisk, transkriptomisk och metagenomisk data.
Svampbiodiversitet och kemodiversitet i Sri lanka (2018-2021)

Tidsram: 3 år (juni 2018 – juni 2021)
Dr. Chamari Hettiarachchi (Institutionen för kemi, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka) är vår internationella samarbetsforskare. Dr. Prabath Jayasinghe (National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency, NARA, Colombo, Sri Lanka) är en associerad partner som kommer att stödja detta projekt. Denna kredit kommer att finansiera två doktorander från University of Colombo (och deras besök vid Uppsala universitet): Jayani Gamage och Lakmini Kosgahakumbura.
Målen med detta projekt är att 1) överföra vår kunskap om svampsystematik till Sri Lankas studenter/forskare för att hjälpa dem att bedöma den sri lankesiska svampbiologiska mångfalden och 2) utveckla en protokoll för att studera svampars naturliga produkt och genetisk mångfald. Vi tror att båda dessa mål kommer att låsa upp potentialen hos sri lankesiska svampar för bioaktiva analyser och läkemedelsupptäckt. För att uppnå detta kommer vi att genomföra ett tvärvetenskapligt samarbetsprojekt som kombinerar vår gemensamma expertis inom farmakognosi, kemi, strukturell klarläggning, systematik och molekylärbiologi. Detta projekt kommer att fylla kunskapsgapet om den sri lankesiska svampbiologiska mångfalden för att driva forskning av hög standard på svampar i detta land. Resultaten kommer att bidra till den sri lankesiska utbildningen, bevarandet av marina biologiska mångfald och ekonomisk utveckling men också till det svenska/sri lankesiska läkemedelsupptäcktsprogrammet.
