MedRen 2022 - Uppsala 4-7 juli 2022

From 4–7 July 2022, the Department of Musicology at Uppsala University will host the 50th anniversary of the Medieval and Renaissance Music Conference.

We invite proposals relating to the entire field of Medieval and Renaissance music in all its breadth and from all scholarly aspects. Further to this, the committee especially encourages proposals relating to the following topics:

• The global histories of Early Music:
  • Music, repertoires, and actors from all regions and religious traditions
  • Pre-modern global interactions, colonialism, microhistories, and transmission
  • Reception of Early Music on a global scale
• Med-Ren at 50:
  • Papers reflecting on the past fifty years of Medieval and Renaissance music scholarship
  • Women and the field of early music
  • State of the discipline, future challenges and opportunities
• Noted anniversaries, such as:
  • The earliest known printing of the Shōmyō Buddhist chant (1472)
  • The birth of Thomas Tomkins (1522) and Francesca Caccini (1587)
  • The deaths of Heinrich von Morungen (1222), Jean Mouton and Franchinus Gaffurius (both 1522), Robert Parsons, Pierre Certon and Claude Goudimel (all 1572)

The conference languages are English, French, Italian, Spanish and German.

MedRen 2022 offers opportunities for on-site participation in Uppsala and for remote, digital participation. The entire conference will be streamed live, with recordings of the sessions made available shortly thereafter. Digital delegates may either submit a pre-recorded presentation or deliver their presentation over Zoom; both will be followed by questions and discussion. Participants who propose to present remotely will be asked to submit their recording or slides by July 1 so that they can be operated locally. Delegates may propose one individual presentation and may additionally be part of one themed session, roundtable, or lecture-recital (two presentations maximum).

Possible formats of presentation include the following:

• Individual papers of 20 minutes (followed by up to 10 minutes of discussion and questions)
• Paired papers (60 minutes total including discussion and questions)
• Themed sessions (120 minutes for 4 papers and 90 minutes for 3 papers, including discussion and questions)
• Roundtables (maximum 90 minutes, please describe its form and content)
• Workshops / lecture-recitals (predominantly an option for on-site and partially pre-recorded sessions; please consult with local organizers before submitting)
• Posters (with a discussion session for online participants)

All proposals need to be submitted to the following e-mail address: medren2022-musik@uu.se by 25 January 2022 for review by the organizing and programme committee. Notification of acceptance will be given by 28 February 2022.

Proposals should be submitted in English and be in doc/x-format, including the following information, in the following order:

On page 1:

• Full title of presentation
• Presentation language
• Name (including names of all participants, if several)
• Contact e-mail of participant(s)
• Affiliation, if any (including affiliation of all participants, if several)
• Proposed format (e.g. individual paper, themed session etc.)
• Indication of whether you intend to give the presentation in person, pre-recorded, or live remotely
• AV requirements
• Brief biography (60-80 words) of participant(s)

On page 2:

• Abstract of no more than 250 words for individual papers
• For panels, 250 words should summarize the proposal and its theme, followed by no more than 100 words on each individual contribution.

Note that by submitting a proposal all potential delegates accept that their presentation and ensuing open discussions will be streamed online, recorded and available to all registered participants for the duration of the conference and up to 48 hours thereafter.
