About

The study of the democratic citizen is an urgent part of humanistic research, and a multifaceted research area that requires an interdisciplinary approach. Within this research area, ABM collaborates with other fields of study, such as gender studies, history, history of science and ideas, and literary studies.

Democracy is constantly debated and maintained through an ever-changing array of institutions, practices and attitudes. At the center of the democratic project is the citizen – individuals and groups who through educational institutions are shaped by the ideas conveyed in cultural representations, and who relate to these ideas in their reading practices. Consequently, they simultaneously act as active and creative co-creators of the democratic the system.

The research area includes the following fields of interest:

• Reading practices
• Library use
• Library practices
• Everyday information- and cultural practices of different groups

Researchers: Kerstin Rydbeck, Åse Hedemark
