Research
The Biology Section at Uppsala University offers graduate degree programs across many biological disciplines to obtain the title of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Research topics are available across the full breadth of modern biology, from cell and molecular biology to ecosystems, from computational to field biology, and studying everything from humans to microbes.

The Biology Research Departments
Research in biology at Uppsala University is primarily done within three research departments. Each department is organized in several sub-departments called "programs"; in total there are 17 programs. Faculty members and students belong to a department and a program, each of which offers a corresponding graduate curriculum.
Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (ICM)
The department of Cell and Molecular Biology is an international, multidisciplinary and distinguished biomolecular department. The department teaches a large number of undergraduate and Master courses for students specializing in Biology, Biotechnology and Biomolecular Engineering. Research interests range all the way from cell biology down to biophysics of single molecules.
ICM is organized in seven research programs:

Several laboratories at ICM are also centers of excellence: Structural Biology, Molecular Biophysics, Protein Synthesis and the Uppsala RNA Research Center.
Department of Ecology and Genetics (IEG)
The department of Evolutionary Ecology and Genetics conducts research at the intersection between ecology, evolution, and genomics. Research spans from studies of natural and sexual selection, local adaptation, speciation, and molecular evolution, to the investigation of communities, ecosystems and the biogeosphere. Studied organisms include animals, plants, fungi and microorganisms. A wide array of questions is addressed, including speciation and how the evolutionary patterns in e.g., morphology, physiology, and behaviour emerge, as well as ecosystem-scale carbon fluxes.

Department of Organismal Biology (IOB)
The Department of Organismal Biology has a strong focus on developmental, functional, and evolutionary themes including early vertebrate evolution, human evolution, microbial evolution and diversity, plant and animal development and physiology, and the effect of anthropogenic chemicals on human and wildlife health. We study all these processes using bioinformatics and experimental molecular and imagery techniques.
