ANDES

Uppsala astronomers are involved in the high-resolution spectrometer for the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). The light collecting area of this 39 m telescope will be huge. Science operations are planned to start in 2027. We will be able to study faint and faraway objects. Spectroscopy is the way to derive temperatures, density and chemical compositions, among other things.

In 2020, the instrument consortium completed a Phase A study, showing the feasibility of designing and building an instrument that covers a spectral range from 0.4 to 1.5 micron with spectral resolution of 3 km/s. It will consist of several specialized arms, each optimized for part of the visible and near-infrared spectrum.

The instrument has been approved by ESO for Phase B which is currently underway. See also https://elt.eso.org/instrument/ANDES/
