Research track: Global health, e-health and migration (GeM)

About the GeM research track

The proposed track will cover the three broad but interconnected fields of global health, e-health and migration, whose individual and joint scope goes beyond that of any single nation-state, community or individual. They are defined as follows:

  • Global health is an area for study, research and practice that prioritises improving health and achieving equity in health for all people worldwide. Global health emphasises transnational health issues, determinants, and solutions; involves many disciplines within and beyond the health sciences and promotes interdisciplinary collaboration; and is a synthesis of population-based prevention with individual-level clinical care [Koplan et al. Towards a common understanding of global health. Lancet 2009 June 6; 373(9679):1993-5].
  • E-health is an emerging field in the intersection of medical informatics, public health and business, referring to health services and information delivered or enhanced through the Internet and related technologies. In a broader sense, the term characterises not only a technical development but also a state of mind, a way of thinking, an attitude, and a commitment to networked, global thinking, improve health care locally, regionally and worldwide by using information and communication technology.
  • The science pertaining to migration and health deals with the movement of persons away from their usual place of residence, either across an international border or within a state, and the causes and health consequences of the same.

Please contact us for any information related to the GeM research track.

  1. Participation in the track activities is voluntary.
  2. Register for the GeM track.
    Email kuf@uadm.uu.se.
  3. Participate in our research track events: Every year, we will host track events, including mingling events for registered PhD students and their supervisors and an invitational workshop relevant to the track. Every alternate year, there will be a GeM Case Challenge, where registered students will be given the opportunity to work on interdisciplinary cases in groups and present their chosen approach to a panel of experts. These cases will be developed collaboratively with the relevant departments at the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy and Uppsala University at large.
  4. Attend one or more track-related courses.
Find a list of courses relevant to the GeM track here
  5. Access to the GlobeLife Student Network: As a student in this research track, you will automatically be registered on GlobeLife and its student section mailing lists. That will give you access to the interdisciplinary Globelife seminars, career seminars and other social events.
  6. Access to seminar series: Students registered in the track will have access to the following seminar series to obtain soft credits towards their research training. You can request the coordinators for the respective seminar series to certify that participation provides soft credits for their research training.
    • GlobeLife hosts a series of highly attended seminars, one focusing on global health and around six per year with international speakers and participants.

    • The Brainpub seminar series is hosted by U-CARE and focuses on e-health and mental health, covering different topics and methods very relevant to the proposed track.
Find upcoming seminars on the U-CARE webpage
    • WOMHER also offers seminars on mental health and cross-cutting topics that could be relevant to the proposed track.

PhD students can be enrolled in any track without having to receive credits. To receive track credits, you should complete the following activities, as per the requirements for track credits outlined on the Staff Portal:

  1. Complete one or more courses relevant to the track equivalent to at least 5 credits. This could be any courses listed here or on a topic relevant to the track, as approved by track leaders. See a list of courses under Courses relevant for the GeM research track.
  2. Register for and participate in at least two GeM research track events during the research training, of which at least one is the GeM case challenge. We will communicate track-day information to all registered students and their supervisors.
  3. Present at a national or international conference relevant to the research track during research training.

A completed track is formalised as a separate course with the name of the track (“Global Health, eHealth and Migration (GeM) research track”) and will provide an additional 1.5 credits towards the student’s research training.

For more information, please contact the track leaders or see Research tracks.
