Medical check-up

Medical check-ups are important for detecting early signs of ill health, illness or injury. By medical check-up is meant a medical measure that is intended to be of support in work environment management. This can encompass biological exposure check-ups, examination by a doctor, health examinations, and fitness for duty assessments.

For certain types of work, there is a legal requirement for employers to arrange medical check-ups. Some jobs also require an aptitude report. Such a report must be presented in the event of an inspection by the Swedish Work Environment Authority.

An employer must arrange for a medical check-up in the following cases:

  • work involving exposure to vibration
  • hand-intensive work
  • night work
  • work with allergenic chemical products
  • other work when a risk assessment shows that it is justified

In the following cases, an employer must arrange for a medical check-up and an aptitude report:

  • allergenic chemical products (epoxy plastic components, formaldehyde resins, methacrylates labelled with H317 or H334 e
  • asbestos
  • synthetic inorganic fibres
  • quartz
  • lead
  • cadmium
  • mercury
  • climbing with a large difference in level (e.g. mast and pole work)
  • diving work
  • Smoke and chemical diving

The employer must also offer medical check-ups in cases where a risk assessment of the work has shown that it is justified.

The Swedish Work Environment Authority has produced a guide to the regulations on medical check-ups aimed at employers. It states what is required for each work covered by the regulations on medical check-ups.

Medical check-ups are carried out by the university's occupational health service by appointment. The Swedish Work Environment Authority has developed templates for order forms and certificates of duty, which are used when orders are placed with the occupational health service.
