AI should be integrated into more programmes

A range of higher education programmes should also provide training in AI to help students develop a greater interdisciplinary understanding of the issues that arise at the intersection of technology and society. These are the conclusions of a new report by the Swedish Higher Education Authority.

More people need to understand AI and how it can be applied in their operational domains. More AI specialists are also required, with both groups needing to develop a greater interdisciplinary understanding. This is according to the report ‘Artificiellt intelligens och högskolans utbildningsutbud’ (‘Artificial intelligence and the range of higher education programmes’). The report has been produced by the Swedish Higher Education Authority on behalf of the government.

In the report, the Authority describes the major challenge being that higher education institutions need to integrate elements of AI into a wide range of programmes, such as teacher training, social worker training and legal training, while also needing to train more AI specialists.

Two proposals for higher education institutions

The report presents two proposals for how higher education institutions can become faster and more flexible and thus better meet the future need for skills:

  • Higher education institutions can exploit contract education for courses for professionals.
  • Institutions can separate individual courses from existing programmes and offer them as freestanding courses shared with students on the programme.
