Mirjam Wentzel graduated from the Bachelor's program in Economics in 2012, followed by a Master's degree at the University of Bergen. Her projects focus on the Norwegian pension reform and the effects of being a victim of crime.

What was your first job after graduation?

My first job after graduation was as an investigator at the Social Insurance Inspectorate, where I got a job after a traineeship (which was part of the Master's program). There I worked for three years writing reports, gaining experience working with register data, but also conducting interviews and qualitative studies.

How has your economics degree at Uppsala University helped you in your career?

The economics degree at Uppsala University gave me a solid foundation and knowledge of the mechanisms that govern human behavior. I developed my analytical skills during my studies, and learned how to write an academic text. The basic knowledge I gained has been important cornerstones in coping with further studies.

Why did you choose to study economics at Uppsala University?

When I applied for the Master's program, I was fully determined that I would focus on political science. But during the compulsory course in economics, my interest was piqued, and I saw how economic theory can be used to analyze policy implications.

What is your best memory from your time at Uppsala University?

My best memories are the student environment, socializing and working with my friends in the program.

What advice would you give to current and future students in economics?

Dare to ask for help, both from fellow students, lecturers and seminar leaders. I would also recommend doing an internship if there is an opportunity to do so. It was incredibly educational, and opened doors to the labor market for me.
