Biologicals (7,5 cr)

Since the turn of the millennium, there has been an exponential growth in the development of biopharmaceuticals. If Sweden and the world are to meet future competence needs, new educational programmes and courses are required. Welcome to a course where you, firmly based in our research environments, get an overview of a field that is becoming increasingly important in healthcare.

With a long half-life and targeted action, protein-based drugs enable new and more effective therapies. Today, they make up more than 20 percent of all new drugs that reach healthcare, but despite extensive growth, only a handful of European programmes and courses are provided within the field. So it is no surprise that when the Faculty of Pharmacy launched the Master's Programme in Biopharmaceuticals in the autumn of 2022, it immediately gained a position among Uppsala University's most popular.

In the course Biologicals, you get an overview of all phases of development, from idea to finished product. Here you get basic knowledge of protein structures, bioinformatics and biotechnology. Together, we highlight how antibodies are used as drugs and how their functionality can be improved for future therapeutic areas. Within the framework of the course, you will also design your own protein-based, biological drug.
