Drugs and Dependence (7,5 cr)

The fact that the Swedes today consume less alcohol than a majority of our European neighbors does not mean that the sum of our burdens has decreased. Rather, it is the map of addiction that has been rewritten. Gambling syndrome is already a diagnosis. Gaming addiction is expected to soon follow the same path. In this course you will learn about the many faces of addiction and society's ability to help.

Someone occupies the bar's outdoor seating already at lunch. Another picks up the mobile phone at every red light. But who is really addicted? The roads to abuse are more complex than ever. Our hardest task seems to be resisting all new digital temptations. With an average screen time of seven hours per person and day, healthcare is facing new and future challenges, which makes it necessary to prepare society for the consequences that await.

In the course Drugs and Dependence, you take an interdisciplinary approach to both traditional and new stimulants. We examine how drugs affect our brain, from the very first time we are exposed to a fully developed addiction. With a focus on both substances historically associated with addiction and more debated appeals such as sugar and physical exercise, we highlight the entire spectrum from addiction and tolerance to society's tools to treat addictions.
