About the project

Crossroads of Archives, AI, and Authenticity: Can Artificial Intelligence contribute to an inclusive and sustainable approach to assessing authenticity of archival records?

This PhD project will investigate questions of power and bias related to notions of authenticity in archives, to archives themselves, and to various Artificial Intelligence methods applied in archives. Who are the creator(s) of a record? Who is included in the archive, who is not? What are the categories used for classifying records and their content, and how does the output of this system impact people? And how does the increased use of AI methods impact this system?

The project considers an interdisciplinary approach, incorporating perspectives from archival science, cultural heritage studies, and computer science.

This PhD project is part of the research project “Artificial Intelligence as a Risk and Opportunity for the Authenticity of Archives”, a Wallenberg NETX cooperation project involving Uppsala University and Linnaeus University. More information can be found on the project’s website.
