About the project

Paths to reading: exploring young people's participation in digital reading communities

The doctoral project concerns the relationship between young people's reading and digital reading communities. By using participatory research methods together with young people aged 16–19, the study aims to explore how young people use and understand digital reading and book culture, for example social media phenomena such as BookTok. The project's research questions concern participation, conditions and knowledge in relation to young people and digital reading communities. What are the possibilities and limitations of participation in digital reading communities? How is involvement in the communities expressed? How does participation in the communities affect reading and information practices, such as searching for and choosing what to read?

I am part of the national research school in Library and Information science, ReSource: Transforming Reading and Source Criticism in Digital Cultures, funded by the Swedish Research Council. I have a dual affiliation as a PhD student at Uppsala University, and as an employee at Södertörn University.

The dissertation (monography) will be written in English.

Supervisors: Kerstin Rydbeck, professor at Uppsala University and Pamela Schultz Nybacka, associate professor at Södertörn University.

Project leader: Nikolina Nordin
