About the project

Systems histories in archaeological knowledge organisation
The PhD project examines knowledge organisation across libraries, archives and museums (LAMs). It traces and compares the histories of information systems (catalogues, databases, digital discovery systems) used in LAMs to examine how previous ways of describing, ordering and disseminating cultural heritage collections impact how this is done today. It focuses specifically on the results from archaeological investigations which are often dispersed between museums (the finds), libraries (the reports and publications) and archives (field notes, drawings and other documentation).
The PhD project is part of the research project CAPTURE. The CAPTURE project is concerned with paradata (data on the processes involved in creation and (re)use of data). The project has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme grant agreement No 818210. More information about CAPTURE please visit the projects main page.

The PhD project ties into several of the research areas represented at the Department of ALM. It is primary a work in knowledge organisation and documentation, but as it looks comparatively at LAM institutions it also connects to Archival Science and Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies. Additionally, the project has tangential connections to several other research areas at the department, such as Digital Humanities.

The thesis (Monograph) will be written in English.
