Crystal structures of ion channels forming a beautiful pattern.

We study chemical reactions and interactions in biological systems

In the field of biochemistry, the molecules and chemical processes that occur in living organisms are studied. Primarily proteins are studied, but also other biological macromolecules such as nucleic acids, carbohydrates and lipids. The aim is to try to understand how these molecules function and interact with each other, what chemical reactions they are involved in and how they can be used in technical applications, as well as how disturbances in their structure and function affect the living organism.

Our research focuses on issues related to the design and synthesis of biological macromolecules, analysis of protein structure and dynamics, complex molecular systems, evolution of biological function and regulation of molecular interactions. Basic studies of enzyme catalysis and metabolic pathways are complemented by applied research based on protein engineering and innovative approaches to drug development.
