New method provides knowledge about how injected drugs act in the human body
In his dissertation Development and characterization of an in vitro method for interaction studies between polymers and pharmaceuticals: Aiding in the development of new drug delivery systems Marcus Wanselius introduces a method that contributes to increased understanding of how drugs injected into fatty tissue act in the body, and also provides support in the development of new drug formulations based on microgels. Initial tests indicate that the method works, but further validation is still required.

Marcus method is part of a larger puzzle where another piece is contributed by PhD colleague Julia Parlow, who is using FRAP – an advanced microscopy technique – to predict how complex peptides interact in gels that resemble human tissue. Further on, the results will be implemented in a project led by Erik Sjögren and Ilse Dubbelboer, to generate information for a database enabling calculation of how biological drugs will act after injection and throughout delivery to their intended target.
