Painting
European painting
European painting, principally from the period 1500–1800, forms part of the collection. Many of the paintings are by Flemish, Dutch and Italian artists. An important work is the Butcher’s Stall from 1551, by the Flemish painter Pieter Aertsen.
Swedish artists
The collection includes Swedish paintings from the Middle Ages to our own time - portraits, landscapes, still lifes and other motifs. Prominent artists represented in the collection are David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl, Alexander Roslin, Bruno Liljefors, Anders Zorn, Isaac Grünewald and Greta Knutson.
Portraits
The most extensive part of the painting collection consists of portraits. Many depict people with connections to Uppsala University – professors, vice-chancellors and scientists. New portraits are added continuously through commissions, the latest of which depicts Vice-chancellor Eva Åkesson, painted by Olle Hamngren in 2020.
